That Voice!
Billie Ray Martin
I've Never Been To Memphis
Add to Cart $10.99

We first heard Billie Ray as the voice behind Electribe 101, and we fell in love with her ever since. Just listen to the sound clip for the brooding "Hacienda Sideburns Remix" and you'll understand why we like her so much. It's the way her voice glides over the song in that slightly off-kilter manner that's just so uniquely hers... and... okay, we're babbling... but it's only because we want what's best for you. There's one uptempo dance mix here, Oliver Moldan's "Europe-Stringless Mix" that contains just under 10 minutes of progressive house... sure to please fans of the UK's Hooj Choons label. Most of the accompanying mixes are on the slower side, but still cool in that smoky, Massive Attack kinda way. An interesting footnote- despite its title, the song was in fact recorded in Memphis.

A song that's been covered by everyone from the Belle Stars to Cyndi Lauper gets a dance-music makeover from Denmark's Captain Jack and his scantily clad counterpart, Illi Love. If you came to this site looking for serious club music, you may want to skip this review and, whatever you do, don't listen to a sound clip as it may age you a couple of years. Yet if it's a fun summer jam you're looking to acquire to go alongside your copy of Vengaboys' "Uncle John from Jamaica," Technotronic's "Mariachi" or, ahem, Los del Rio's "Macarena," boy have you found it. Icky icky!

Not everyone realizes that if it weren't for these not-so-memorable but well-composed songs like Chab's instrumental trance offering "7 Years" the dance floor would be littered with one big anthem after another. Yeah, we admit it- not one person is probably gonna be humming this track after last call, but with it's lush melody and throbbing trance bassline, "7 Years" definitely makes a great cool-down after you've already thrown your hands in the air and taken a dive in the pool. The better of the two is the "Exhange Remix," which is recommended for enthusiasts of that dark, afterhours sound.

LAST CHANCE to get this one, folks!!! Deleted both overseas and domestically, we were able to score a limited amount for Perfect Beat cutomers. This is Daft Punk's follow up to their HUGE international hit "Around The World". The title of this track is appropriate as you can't help but hear residue from their first hit throughout. Not that that's a bad thing, familiarity sells in this country! Filtered disco, grinding beats , electronic voices.... for some of us, that's all we need.

Lost Witness & ATFC Mixes!
Dina Carroll
Someone Like You / Good to Me CD2
Add to Cart $10.99

Lemme guess- you're wondering if CD2 of Dina Carroll's two part single, "Someone Like You," is as great as the near-perfect CD1, right? Well hold onto your silly liitle Abercrombie baseball hat because it's actually even better! Dina's incredible voice fits like a glove on both remixes, despite the fact that one is a straight-up disco club mix of "Good To Me" by ATFC and the other a thumping trance take on the title track originally penned by Van Morrisson and remixed by Lost Witness. Did you catch all that? Each mix shines the spotlight on Dina's vocals and, thank the lord, aren't edited... unlike the "Almighty Mix" on CD1. We could go on and on, but the sound clips speak speak for themselves. Essential!

Don't let the title fool you- CD1 in this two part set from the simultaneously gorgeous AND talented Dina Carroll is less about the R&B title track, "Someone Like You," and ALL ABOUT the massive club mixes from Almighty and K-Klass. Both cuts are grade A material, with Almighty taking things towards the sunny side with a club mix of "Ain't No Man" that's got circuit t-dance written all over it. On the other side of the emotional coin, K-Klass achieve peak-hour perfection with a remix of Dina's fiery you-did-me-wrong anthem "Good To Me." This is as good as this stuff gets, folks.

If you're a fan of dramatic vocal trance, you're definitely need to add this disc to your collection. A grand finale throughout, DuMonde and our ever-reliable DJ Tiesto team up to present two solid mixes of similar design. First is the Tiesto mix, which initially showcases the song's layout- a big dramatic opening with frenetic trance synths building up to a frenzy, until the beat suddenly drops-out and listeners are treated to a theatrical but effectively dramatic monologue told in a woman's voice. Buckle your seatbelt from there on as all of the songs elements collide for the big, stadium trance finish. We also liked DuMonde's "Full On Vocal Mix" that's designed almost identically to Tiesto's. Which one will you prefer?

The Classic Remixed!

A popular item in the store and proof that virtually everything will be remixed at some point in the future, Eddy Grant's 1981 hit "Electric Avenue" has at last been rivised for today's demanding disco dance floor. Two club mixes here, both of them quite faithful to the original; including all the versus and sing-a-long chorus you'd expect and the higher tempo beat you want. If interrogated, we'd confess to liking the "Ringbang Remix" a little more as it's a better combination of the familiar elements of the classic and the new production tricks of today.

Faithless
We Come 1

Another split decision among the Perfect Beat staff with Faithless' latest spoken-word-meets-progressive-house single, "We Come 1." The UK super-group, led by Kristine W's "Land of the Living" production team of Rollo and Sister Bliss... who, incidentally, are the elder siblings of none other than Dido, set to please faithful fans by delivering a typically Faithless track, designed much in the same vein of their earlier singles, most memorably the big room classic "Insomnia." Like that tune, "We Come 1" requires a lot of patience before reaching the big payoff in the middle, but once you get there you remember what it is about their approach to progressive house that made you like 'em from the start.

Do yourself a favor- click on the sound clip for the "Extended Version" of this trance cut and just TRY not to throw your hands up in the air and smile. Kinda hard, isn't it? With touching and well-delivered lyrics like "On Your Own / And Though You Feel Alone / You Are Alive" this is the kind of tune that has us moving our feet on the dance floor and makin' us weep in private. Not everybody utilizes the powerful chorus, though, as the usually on-point Blank & Jones offer a sort of meandering trance remix, whereas the Warp Brothers catapult their usual brand of aural assault for all you hard house fans. The surprise here comes from Parka, who's tribal trance remix is nothing short of epic. Good stuff.

The hardest thing about writing a review of Girls @ Play terrifyingly entertaining debut, appropriately titled "Airhead," is deciding which jokes to make about it. Not that it's horrid- on the contrary, "Airhead" is a catchy-as-the-clap club tune with poptastic lyrics and a chorus you'll be singing for days... perhaps even against your own will. Included on the single are several different club mixes ranging from Euro pop to trance to hard house, all featuring the talented vocal acrobatics of each Girls @ Play member- the Rodeo Gal, the Girl Mechanic, the Lady Cop, the Successful Business Woman and the alleged Airforce One Pilot. Riiiight. Also includes the video which, not unlike the fate of the Nazi's in Raiders of the Lost Arc, may actually melt off your face.

What's On Your Mind 2001 (Pure Energy)
Add to Cart $7.99

Some of us were asking "What the devil?!" when this crazy lil' single found its way on our store shelves, apparently released in an effort to build excitement for Information Society's Greatest Hits collection (they had more than one?) which, by the way, is also available here. Tommy Boy clearly wanted to do the song justice, acquiring Junior Vasquez, Boris & Beck and, ahem, Sugarpussy (no relation to Thunderpuss) to remix. All three mixes are loyal to the original version's sound bites; keeping the tempo at a comfortably energetic club pace, leaving the vocals in the foreground and sprinkling that "pure energy" sample all over the goddamn place. Still not convinced? Well, DJs hesitant to make that first leap may note that Paulo played this tune at LA Pride's Closing Party and the place just about went into convulsions. I'll take it!

Jennifer Lopez's latest single was apparently too big to fit on just one disc- they had to split it in two. This one includes the excellent house remix from Full Intention- a mix her record company apparently deemed strong enough to sell the second disc. We certainly sold a lot of 'em... and we have a strange feeling it wasn't on behalf of the "Main Rap #1" mix of "Love Don't Cost a Thing" featuring P-Diddy... the artist formerly known as J-Lo's boyfriend. Ouch! Not as well-rounded as disc one, but it's the only place you'll find entire Full Intention mix. That's how they get ya.

Disc one in a two single collection, this one's got the flaming Thunderpuss mix that all you J-Lovers have been hunting for. The buzz over the mix is well-deserved- Thunderpuss' decision to pick up the tempo to a club-ready speed and back it with the catchy synth hook from the radio mix make their version flat-out better than J--Lo's original. After all, what was a song loaded with lyrics about DJ's and dance floors doing at a paltry 92 beats per minute? No wonder she keeps having to heckle the DJ to play her song- it's too damn slow! We recommend she request the Thunderpuss mix. We certainly do.

Single file line, people! Single file! We had people waiting in line at the store for this super hot single, the latest offering from livin' legend and circuit diva Kim English, "Jumpin' & Bumpin'." Ever seen the look on the face of a circuit queen when you have to tell them you sold out of a must-have single? It ain't pretty, folks. Then again, we wouldn't be too happy without this tune in our lives- an energetic circuit jam with shades of Darude's fiery "Sandstorm" thrown in for maximum crowd response. Serving as the perfect calm-down to all this jumpin' around is a bonus tune, the equally slick "Supernatural," which is complimented by club and dub mixes as well. Don't bother braving the streets, get it here!

In My Pocket (Remixes)

Whoa! Mandy Moore busts out of the gate with this in-demand dance single containing a big room club mix from Thunderpuss and an edited Hex Hector remix. If you haven't already heard this tune on the dancefloor, you're going to the wrong clubs. "In My Pocket" has all the ingredients of a circuit floor-filler loaded with big builds, crashing crescendos and spot-on vocal stylings from the talented Ms. Mandy. Although ballads aren't really our specialty, we gotta mention the standout bonus track "I Wanna Be With You" which is performed live and impressive as all hell. Forget the teen-queen label, this one can actually be called a singer.

Tragic Spice!
Melanie B
Lullaby / Feels So Good

Ack! Melanie B brings new meaning to her "Scary" namesake with this frightmare of a single, the odorous ode to her new baby, "Lullaby." You get no extra points for breeding around here, all we care about is good music- and this ain't it. First of all, the single is poorly put together as it features a paltry three-minute R&B remix and only one alleged club remix of one of her earlier ear assaults. Just when you thought things couldn't get worse- the video is included.

Cool Trance & Fresh Breath In One!
Miss Peppermint
Day By Day

If my real name were Caba Kroll, I'd probably prefer going by Miss Peppermint, too. It sounds more minty fresh and similar to the icy cool vibes found on this, her latest vocal trance single. All the mixes use Mint's vocals and run along that fine line between Hi-NRG and European pop trance. This is due mostly to her vocal "delivery," which warrants comparisons to other Euro stars like Miss Jane and Rollergirl. Of the four extended mixes, Miss Peppermint's mix makes a strong showing- armed with a throbbing trance kick and obligatory spacy synths. However, the best track is the "Blaulight Mix" that skillfully switches between hard and soft sequences. This single would probably work well in both gay and straight club circles... but they'd probably get too excited and spill beer all over the place.

When looking for good vocal dance music, you can almost always rely on the single-named divas to deliver. There's Amber, Sonique, Celeda... and in this case the lovely Rhona. One track after another keeps you "satisfied" with sizzling mixes including a punchy, circuit-style Hex Hector mix; Eric Kupper's smooth, East Coast house take; and Robbie Rivera's gritty, disco funk vocal mix. Actually, all the mixes are centered around Rhona's sassy vocals, which are actually quite good and delivered with all the attitude required for a successful club mix. Good stuff!

Do you really need us to tell you how amazing this single is? I mean, you already know the track as among Sarah McLachlan's best and most beautiful songs. Put that together with what you know of DJ Tiesto's brand of anthemic trance from singles like SuReal's "You Take My Breath Away" and toss it all a digestibly-priced domestic single. The math speaks for itself- you're going to like this one. And hey, did we forget to mention the additional remix of "Sweet Surrender" by Boilerhouse? Well, it's on there, too, alongside a 9 minute trance remix of McLachlan's haunting "I Love You" by BT. Sweet!

They secret here is Spiller's downright perfect disco production that proves you can make a song entertaining and classy at the same time. Poptastic Power!

Here And Now (Almighty)

Steps, the popular Euro-boy/girl quintet returns with yet another poptastic toe tapper sure to satisfy the salival cravings of Hi-NRG enthusiasts everywhere. Judging by the cover, one can only guess which one of the three suspiciously good-looking Step-girls is the lead singer... but whoever it is does a great job on the "Almighty Mix" of "Here and Now," with flickering similarities to Abba- the illegitimate Godparents of this purely entertaining Euro pop. Too bad the other two tracks are radio edits... otherwise, a single that delivers the goods.

New Release!
Stereo MC's
Deep Down & Dirty
Add to Cart $10.99
|
| |
Well here's a sight for sore eyes- the Stereo MC's come out of the early 90's abyss to let us know they're still "Deep Down & Dirty." In all, it's a particularly good single... thanks largely to some sinister house mixes from Jon Carter, complete with unsettling strings and slithering flutes to create a tune that just sounds like it's up to no good. Perfect for a night at the bath house... so we've been told. Um... Two Lone Swordsmen personify the single's weakest points- a mix so desperate to stray from the conventional club mix that it sounds like a million other experimental lemons. Good thing the "Ordinateur Sound Remix" makes up fot it, catching the ear by slamming fierce breakbeats against distorted techno riffs. At times a little too eager to be cool, but certainly one of the better hetero dance singles out this moment.

Twisted America is back and off to a damn good start with this top-notch piece of tribal house plastic. With vocal input from Victoria Wilson-James, who's work with the Shamen and Soul II Soul had us diggin' on her way back when, Superchumbo comes out you with a bold, dare-we-say "original" sound that achieves the intensity of a big room circuit anthem while keeping things very smooth, elegant and very, very sexy. Always at the head of his game, Manny Lehman has been heard playing this cut much to the satisfaction of many a queen looking for that perfect song to get your freak on and your shirt off.

Oh yeah! New from the ever-reliable VC Recordings comes Tomba Vira's tribal house single "The Sound of: Oh Yeah," an excellent new offering along the lines of cutting edge artists like Santos and Yomanda... the latter of which make an appearance on track 2, treating listeners to their trademark mix of sci-fi and spookiness. Oliver Klein's far darker house remix is probably the least ground-breaking, but if the first two tracks weren't so damn good we'd probably be raving about it, too. A very good single for advanced dance music fans only.

We always get a kick out of seeing new material from Utah Saints- among the few early rave groups to remain standing after all those damn glowsticks dimmed. What's kept them alive is their eagerness to evolve their sound- a hit-and-miss trademark that pays off big time with the essential "Lost Vagueness." Two mixes rule this single, the "Thunderbolt Edit" a cinematic spine-tingler garnished with traces of Moby, and the "Oliver Lieb Main Mix" a hard trance stomper contrasted against touching robotic vocals. Lieb's mix has already made it onto a few choice import compilations despite the Saints' commercial name, a testament to their talent and apparent determination. Also includes Josh Wink remix.

Oh... my... gawd. Folks, if there was ever a time in which you could trust our supremely educated input, well, let it be now. If you like beautiful, hypnotic club music accented with trance elements and driven by stellar female vocals, you owe yourself a copy of "Innocente." The song plays like a sad movie you can't help but watch over and over again, most especially in the case of DJ Tiesto's mix that effortlessly integrates Sixpence None The Richer vocalist Leigh Nash's plaintive singing style with the trademark-Tiesto production of throbbing trance rushes and sweeping sonic waves. At a more experimental end of the spectrum is Deep Dish's "Gladiator Mix" which chops the vocals up to create a hazy, atmospheric track. Lost Witness present fans of the faster stuff with an accelerated trance remix that pushes the song its dramatic hilt. Grade A.
